Now to the Tuesday Question:

Have you ever tried Freehand Crochet or Knitting? If you have, do have an idea in your head before you start or do you just start working on the project and hope it will turn out? Lately I have played with the thought of trying it out, am just still a little chicken about it, lol.

  1. Hi Erika, my crochet vessels tend to be freeform crochet but not of the scumbling variety, more modular units pieced together. I do like the random effect of piecing as I go but I must admit to preferring to have control of the overall composition so usually wait till the end before stitching anything together. I think I would do this even if I wasn't working in 3D forms. I do like the balancing of families of shapes and colour - its one of the parts I really enjoy and I get great satifaction when I feel its all fitting together 'just right' at the end.

The whole process does tend to be organic though and new ideas seem to generate from the initial sample as I go. Maybe start off small and enjoy not worrying about whether it's working or not:))If you get a better idea as you go to try next then you have progressed even if you don't end up liking the first finished piece. Sometimes, I'll put an idea on hold or dump it completely if I have another brainwave that I like better. (although I do write or sketch out ideas so I remember them.) I also find that visual notes and diagrams also help me see that not all my ideas need to be made and I can edit/shorten the experimental making list. This also helps me move my ideas a long quicker as well.

To be honest, whatever works best for you - and enjoy the journey as well as the outcome:)) Can't wait to see what you come up with! elaine xx
